When the demon cultivator Qiu Ning learned that a perilous love tribulation was coming, he decided to take his original form, a petite, snowball-like mountain bird, and use it to avoid the tribulation.
After all, who would fall in love with a feathered beast that couldn't speak?
So Qiu Ning announced that he was going into seclusion. Once the love tribulation disappeared from his fate, he would return to being the master of Yaoyao Hall.
After happily mooching food and drink in the human world for several years, Qiu Ning discovered that the tribulation had not faded at all. It had only grown more vicious.
Qiu Ning: Who on earth is so twisted that they won't even leave a bird alone?

After some investigation, Qiu Ning happened upon the shadow guard Jiuzhi in a rundown house where he had once stayed. He discovered that Jiuzhi's love tribulation overlapped with his own.
Qiu Ning: Hah, I want to see how Jiuzhi plans to fall in love with me when I keep this feathered-beast form.
And so, as a little bird, Qiu Ning followed Jiuzhi around, fishing, farming, doing laundry, and cooking, until they became familiar with each other.
Jiuzhi: Little chirper, look how fat this worm is. Open wide...
Qiu Ning: I'm not a chicken! I don't eat worms either! I want to eat the food you cook!
Jiuzhi: Little chirper, I never thought you'd like human food, and even have the same tastes as my master.
Qiu Ning: Cough, cough... I don't, I haven't!

Later, Yaoyao Hall was attacked. When Jiuzhi learned that Qiu Ning had died while in seclusion, he frantically clawed through the ruins of the hall, murmuring:
"Master, I have feelings for you... Did you hear me?"
Seeing this, Qiu Ning hurriedly pinned the self-harming Jiuzhi against the wall:
"I heard you. And then?"
Jiuzhi trembled beneath Qiu Ning:
"M-Master, weren't you in seclusion...?"
Qiu Ning looked up at the starry sky. His love tribulation was at hand:
"Jiuzhi, shall we overcome this love tribulation together and spend the rest of our lives together?"
