When the Geisha Went into Hiding

When Su Dai heard that the young heir wanted to buy her freedom, she was momentarily stunned. She knew it was impossible, but still said yes.

Sure enough, when the agreed-upon date arrived, the young heir never came.

From then on, people heard that Peach Blossom House had a star courtesan who was consumed by worry, coughed up blood every day, had contracted a venereal disease, and was not long for this world.

On a snowy New Year's Eve, a great fire broke out at Peach Blossom House. It was put out at first, but later, somehow, the whole establishment burned to blackened rubble, and not a single courtesan's remains could be found.

Meanwhile, in Hanshan Town, Jiangnan, a tofu seller as beautiful as a celestial being appeared.

By day, the tofu beauty sold tofu, and her life was fairly peaceful, until one day on her way home, she rescued a scar-faced man covered in wounds. He had no memory of who he was, so he had to stay at the tofu beauty's home for a while.

On the day the tofu beauty married a scholar, a drunken guest lifted the bride's veil and shouted, "Isn't she the star courtesan Peony from Peach Blossom House?"

The scholar immediately called off the wedding, and everyone stared at the tofu beauty and whispered.

The scar-faced man stepped forward and said, "If you won't marry her, I will!"
