The Taiping Guangji records: In the second year of the Jianzhong era of the Tang Dynasty, rumors spread through the Huai River region that a vicious ghost had come from Hunan. Some called it the Hairy Ghost, some the Hairy Man, and some Cheng, though its name was not consistent. The ghost could transform in countless ways. People said it liked to eat human hearts, taking them from young women and young boys alike. The people were terrified and gathered together in large groups. At night, they held feasts by torchlight and dared not sleep, keeping bows and knives at hand for protection. Whenever the ghost entered a household, people in ten thousand homes beat boards and bronze vessels, making a noise that shook heaven and earth. Some people were so terrified they went mad and died. This happened everywhere, and even official bans could not put an end to it.
Theme: The sunlight will eventually reach every corner of darkness.
