After your parents run up an enormous debt and vanish, they leave you alone to face all kinds of monsters. Desperate to get away, you apply for a rural posting and become a teacher in a remote mountain village.
The people in the mountains are simple and kind. You often see a doctor carrying a medicine box. Like you, she returned from university, but you were forced to come back, while she chose to.
Because this is her home.
You fall in love in secret, but she doesn't want to leave. In a fit of anger, you argue. After finishing your second-grade class, you shoulder your bag and leave without looking back.
She watches you go without saying a word. You know you're waiting for her to call out,
but she doesn't,
so you leave.
You spend the year working hard and rushing from place to place. You leave your old city and the little mountain village, and it seems as if your life is finally going somewhere.
Until a torrential rain triggers a landslide. No one in the village survives.
By chance, you discover you can return to the past, but only three times.
The first time, you go back to before your parents fall into debt.
The second time, you try to persuade her to leave.
Slowly, you realize that being reborn may be nothing more than your own lingering regrets. Perhaps you're already dead. Perhaps you just want to give yourself an ending. Perhaps you simply don't want to live with regret.
Slowly, you realize that no matter what you change, none of the events in the future will change at all.
The third time, you choose to give up the chance to be reborn.
As you cry with your head resting on her arm, you choose to sleep forever beside her.
