The Mermaid in the Basement

She is Alicia Liu, a Chinese foundling and a dishwasher living in a cramped corner of San Francisco's Chinatown. Though she lives in one of the most prosperous places in the world, she seems cut off from San Francisco. Her life is like a forgotten corner of the city's consumerist landscape, forever surrounded by the endless grease of an American Chinese restaurant kitchen. But she has never felt lost, because in her basement she nurtures a secret dream: she has a mermaid.
