The next day, when Zuo Muheng returned from court, she saw a bruise at the corner of his mouth. Rong Sui touched his lip, surprised. “What happened?”

His crown princess, who had gone to Mount Rong to recuperate a few days earlier, had appeared on the streets of Mocheng, rosy-cheeked and capable of standing up to a drunken brute.

Wen Yucheng approached unhurriedly and straightened the crooked little flower on the girl's hat veil. “Shu'er, what a coincidence.”

At his words, her delicate hand froze, and the brush dropped, rolling slowly to his feet.

Chi Shu's smile vanished at once. She tilted her head innocently. “Did you come to see me?”

“I never expected to run into you while coming down the mountain to fetch medicine!”

The girl's eyes were as clear as ever, but her trembling lashes betrayed a hint of guilt.

Behind her, the two accompanying men silently took out a handkerchief and stuffed it into the brute's mouth.

Wen Yucheng smiled and touched Chi Shu's flushed cheek with his fingertips.

“Before the crown princess left the palace, she was so frail that I was terribly worried, so I came to see you.”

“Why have you grown even frailer after only a few days of recuperation at Mount Rong?”

“You've lost weight.”
