The Maid

Xu Zhen was the maid of Fang Ya, the young lady of the house. Every day, she served the young lady tea, tidied her room, and never dared utter a word of complaint. The young lady was spoiled, willful, arrogant, and domineering. She only had eyes for her friend Chen Kezhi and had never once given Xu Zhen a proper look. The night the young lady was rejected after confessing her feelings, she ran back to the estate in tears. For the first time, she threw her arms around Xu Zhen and poured her heart out for a whole day and night. “I like her so much. I do everything for her. Why is she so cruel to me?” “What’s wrong with me?” Xu Zhen didn’t dare say a word. She didn’t dare let the young lady know she harbored improper feelings for her. Even less did she dare tell her that whenever Chen Kezhi visited the estate, she would touch Xu Zhen’s body, seemingly by accident. * The young lady found Xu Zhen’s diary in a drawer. It was filled from cover to cover with Xu Zhen’s adoration for her. Overcome with shame and fury, she thought: How dare a lowly maid presume to dream of being with me? The thought disgusted her. Angry, she went to find her friend Chen Kezhi, wanting to tell her how disgusted and furious she felt. But in Chen Kezhi’s room, she heard Xu Zhen’s broken, tearful moans.
