The empire faced the great trial foretold by the priests: the Grim Reaper had arrived, bringing death and destruction.
Everyone braced themselves, wondering how they might survive the Reaper.
Plan A: Assassinate the god. Take the Reaper out.
Plan B: Make a deal with the Reaper and sacrifice the neighboring country.
Plan C: Drive the Reaper away. This might be a little easier than Plan A.
At last, the Grim Reaper arrived.
A beautiful young boy, so lovely he made people's hearts flutter, wore a gloomy black robe and carried a huge scythe that was completely out of proportion to his size. His innocent eyes glistened with tears as he blinked.
The Reaper asked in a plaintive voice, "Carrying this scythe is so tiring, and I'm hungry. Do you have anything tasty?"
...?
This Reaper is kind of cute. Not sure yet. Let's wait and see.
The royal family and the church watched as the Reaper happily played with cats and dogs every day, and even used his scythe to help a farmer harvest chives. Someone finally voiced their doubts.
Could this guy be a fake, here to mooch food and drink? How is he anything like the Grim Reaper?
When the Reaper got yelled at, he trembled, then his lip quivered and tears began to fall.
Everyone's hearts melted.
Who cares if he's the Grim Reaper? What's wrong with giving him something to eat and drink?!
Then, in the next instant, someone's heart really did melt.
Literally melted.
Everyone stared in silence for a few seconds at the protester who had just died on the spot, then rushed to comfort the boy. Or rather, to comfort the Reaper.
Damn, so the Grim Reaper doesn't even need his scythe to claim lives these days. He just cries! Shit!
And so, Plan D: Keep the Reaper happy. Don't let him cry, no matter what.
Everyone agreed that the most important part of carrying out this plan was keeping the Demon Riley away from the little Reaper.
After all, that guy was temperamental and ruthless. They suspected that, upon seeing the little Reaper, he'd say something like: "Hahaha, cry! Cry louder! Let more people die!"
The thought was so horrifying that everyone shuddered.
Yet no one expected to see Riley gently coaxing the little Reaper not to cry and trying to cheer him up.
Everyone was moved: The Demon was willing to humble himself and lower his status for the sake of other people's lives, even groveling at someone's feet (?). Seriously, they could cry.
But what the Demon Riley was actually saying into the little Reaper's ear was: "Tell me who you want dead, and I'll kill them for you. Don't cry, good boy."
He didn't care about death. All he cared about was the little Reaper's hurt feelings.
