Synopsis

Heartbroken and nearly killed, she was fortunately rescued and survived. To protect the family's reputation, the Xie family announced that Xie Yao had died.
Second, determined to trample the husband who had sullied her reputation underfoot, Xie Yao decided to throw caution to the wind. Hiding her identity, she did everything she could to become Zhou Zhiyan's concubine.

Overnight, the illustrious Jiang family incurred the current emperor's wrath, dragging the entire clan down with it. Some went mad, others died, and the only one spared severe punishment was the Jiang family's youngest legitimate daughter, Jiang Jirou. She was merely sent to the Imperial Household Department.
Fallen from a noble household into the dust, Jiang Jirou proceeded cautiously at every turn, but still became entangled in palace intrigues. Because of her peerless beauty, someone with ulterior motives sent her to the emperor's bedchamber.
The candlelight flickered. The emperor was about to pull back Jiang Jirou's covers when, knowing there was no way out, she heard a clear voice from beyond the curtains.
"I have an urgent matter to discuss with Your Majesty."
As the palace attendants carried Jiang Jirou out, she met that man's distant, cool gaze for a moment, and her heart tightened.
The owner of that voice had saved her. After learning that he was the all-powerful Grand Tutor Lu Yuezheng, she went to great lengths to meet him and offer her thanks.
His dark-red official robe, embroidered with a qilin, set off his fair, handsome features. His words, however, were merciless.
"Miss Jiang, you think too highly of yourself. I did indeed have an urgent matter to discuss with His Majesty, but you went to great lengths to meet me. I doubt it was only to thank me."
Jiang Jirou wasn't offended. She gathered her skirts, bowed, and smiled faintly. "Lord Lu and I have the same enemy."
"I can lend you a hand. What do you say, Lord Lu?"
Unexpectedly, someone set them up. After one reckless night, Lu Yuezheng clutched Jiang Jirou's wrist, his face dark. The faint scent of sandalwood filled the air. Jiang Jirou looked up and smiled. "Grand Tutor, there's no need to worry. I know my place. I have no intention of reaching for a higher branch."
Lu Yuezheng released her wrist, his voice cool. "Good."
The emperor died, and the imperial capital fell into chaos. Lu Yuezheng led his troops straight into the capital and purged the palace, then was hailed by the officials and ascended the throne.
Jiang Jirou stood to one side and bowed. "Congratulations, Your Majesty, on achieving your ambition. You should also fulfill the promise you made me."
"A letter of release and one hundred thousand silver taels, and let me leave the palace."
Lu Yuezheng turned to look at her for a long time. Just as Jiang Jirou thought he was going to renege, he answered in a low voice, "All right."

The moon hung above the treetops. Jiang Jirou was about to lift the curtain and climb into the carriage leaving the capital when someone suddenly pulled her into his arms. The crisp scent of wine mingled with sandalwood, and his usually cool, controlled voice trembled slightly.
"Jirou, don't leave me."
