Surprise, I'm a Player

I often feel out of place among my family because I'm so ordinary.

Not only are they all incredibly mysterious, each of them seems like the protagonist of a novel with a tragic, powerful backstory.

For example:

Some have mysterious pasts, carry deep grudges, and bear prophecies like, "No matter how powerful or invincible a hero you are, you'll never be able to protect the people you love."

Some are the real heirs of wealthy families who were switched at birth, unloved by their adoptive parents and unwanted by their birth parents, and left home to wander alone at an early age.

Some are as elusive as dragons, always either missing or on their way to disappearing again.

By comparison, aside from having amnesia as a bonus feature, I really do seem like a background character who just happens to pass by the protagonists of the world.

I can't help feeling like they've all left me out!

Oh, well. I'm used to it, really.

I'm used to them always keeping secrets, always being on the road, and coming home one day covered in wounds. I'm used to being the only ordinary person in this family.

That is, until one day I dreamed that they were all dead, dead, dead again...

That's taking things too far.

It's bad enough that they never include me. Now they've all gone and died behind my back!

I woke up furious.

A notification sounded at the same time:

Story loading successful. Player [Ye Yan] is now online.

Huh?

Huh, huh, huh?!

So I was actually a player, and this world was just a supernatural mystery game I was playing. My family were all characters in the game.

Hmmm...

After all this, I'm the protagonist?

Bad news: My dream was real. My family really are all on the verge of dying.

Good news: Everyone knows the Fourth Catastrophe can do anything. Saving someone should be a piece of cake, right? If all else fails, just add points to Deep Blue! (Crossed out) Wrong channel...

If all else fails, reload and save the day!

I grinned, full of confidence.

Great. The first step to saving my whole family...

Cutting ties with them.

The blurb is in first person; the main text will probably be in third person.

An old draft is being replaced. Stay tuned.
