“There are people in this world who are alive, yet dead.”

“Why bring that up all of a sudden?”

“It just occurred to me.”

“About someone in particular? Could it be yourself?”

“Maybe.”

“Ha. So which are you, alive or dead?”

“I... don’t know either.”

“Let me put it another way. Do you choose life or death?”

“All I know is that I can’t choose death.”

“What a strange fellow!”

“Brother Bai has known for some time that I’m a little strange.”

“Hmph, you strange cat!”

“Isn’t a mouse that spends day and night tangled up with a cat even stranger?”

“Do you still not understand? I’m only strange because of you.”

“...”

“As long as you don’t die, I’ll never die either.”

“What if neither of us gets to choose between life and death?”

“Then remember this, little cat. Even if we go to the ends of the earth or the depths below, no song of parting will ever sound between us.”
