Luo Yan's dream is to be a lazy salted fish who eats without working and waits to die. But he transmigrates into a book, becoming a minor cannon-fodder character with the same name as himself.
The cannon fodder falls in love with the book's male lead, Qin Ran, at first sight, relentlessly pesters him until Qin Ran agrees to be with him, and eventually dies at the hands of the female lead who later rises to prominence.
Luo Yan only wants to stay alive and be a salted fish. He says, "Date the male lead? What's that? Isn't being a single salted fish great?"
Are video games not fun, anime not good, potato chips not tasty, or fizzy drinks not delicious?
He has no desire to get involved in the male lead's romantic battlefield!
Luo Yan lazes around, but everyone else still follows the plot and comes looking for trouble.
The seductive little bottom, the pitiful white lotus, the scheming green tea bitch... One after another, they make it clear, openly or in secret: "You're not good enough for Qin Ran! He should be mine!"
Luo Yan watches the latest anime while cracking sunflower seeds, utterly unconcerned. "Mm-hmm, good luck. Be brave and chase love. Just don't touch the fried chicken legs I bought. They're my midnight snack." Then he gulps down most of a glass of cola.
Luo Yan meets every change with stillness, and at last, one day, things finally quiet down.
But the male lead, who should have been ignoring him, comes knocking.
Qin Ran: "There's someone I like. I want to pursue him."
Luo Yan chews his tapioca pearls. "Hm? Then go for it."
Qin Ran: "All right. I'll go for it."
And so...
Luo Yan is trapped on his favorite reclining sofa and forced to endure a sofa pin.
"I'm going to pursue you, Yanyan."
The bubble tea in Luo Yan's hand almost spills.
Did he just make a suggestion that could get him into serious trouble?
Luo Yan puts on a stern face and tries to salvage the situation. "We can't. Salted fish and humans are reproductively incompatible. We can't date."
Qin Ran: "... :) Do you think I believe a word of that nonsense?"
Qin Ran realized long ago that something was wrong with this world. The familiar people around him would suddenly become inexplicably strange one day, then start pursuing him with feverish enthusiasm, as if they had become someone else.
Except for Luo Yan.
[Bonus Scene]
Luo Yan solemnly turns down Qin Ran's invitation to go on a date. "I want to be a salted fish that doesn't have to move."
Qin Ran is silent for a long time, then says in a low voice, "You don't have to move. I'll do the moving."
One night later on, Luo Yan learns the profound meaning of those words.
