Historical BL | Romance Is Everything (Updated)
I'm an indiscriminate shipper who sees romance everywhere. These are fully purchased historical BL stories I've recommended over the years. I love relationships between equals, and I judge stories by the prose, plot, and characters' brains. I'll flag a few things that might be dealbreakers; if nothing's noted, both leads are inexperienced.
Underrated but Great
A rather subjective list of recommendations, mostly lesser-known stories. I personally prefer older love interests, melodrama, well-balanced plots and romance, smooth prose, and originality. I don’t self-insert, I just read.

Eclectic and shameless about my tastes: top-focused, bottom-focused, or switch; top-leaning or bottom-leaning, with mutual pampering. Plot-focused or relationship-focused, angsty, sweet, heartbreaking, melodramatic, or pure love. Mutual 1v1 pairings. All ratings are subjective.

CPJ, bottom-leaning. No insulting the other half of the ship, no breaking up or reversing the ship, and no self-insert romance. Any genre is fine. Pregnancy is a hard no.
The Peach Blossoms Still Smile in the Spring Breeze
I prefer historical danmei. In the relationship, I like aloof tops and passionate bottoms (not every book on this list necessarily fits). I like melodramatic angst, and mainly read for the couples. Characterization and the romance matter most to me; I’m not picky about anything else.

Finished Reads That Hit My Kinks, Mostly BL
Nonhuman characters, unhinged characters, protagonist-focused, fated enemies, fighting against instinct. No content warnings: sweet moments and angst, happy ending. More serious in tone. Three-star picks have significant flaws; four- and five-star picks are mostly solid.
Wuxia/Xianxia or Senior-Junior Brother Romance
Love these
Older Love Interests in Xianxia and Cultivation
Mostly teacher-student or senior-junior pairings, with older tops. A few have younger tops, but they're really good.
Handsome Bottoms, Pure Enjoyment
“Handsome” in the title refers to appearance. Check the tags before reading. Some are only suitable for readers with broad tastes. I don't read submissive tops, tops who are bottoms, or reversals. I prefer fair-skinned, lean, muscular bottoms, but not all the stories fit. My outside-the-story opinions are in the comments.

If I Get Into Historical BL, My Life Is Over
Control freaks and yumejoshi stay out. Violators will be executed immediately. I'll briefly note my deal-breakers, but this is fundamentally just a personal organizational list. I can't do anything about locked chapters at certain list levels, and I hate that book recommendations and completed-book ratings are linked.
CPJ-Friendly Reads
No control freaks, no Mary Sues, and no shippers who fetishize either the top or the bottom. This list features lesser-known, readable pairings rather than the most popular ones.
My Personal Mixed Bag, Mostly Bottoms
I read all sorts, but tend to favor submissive characters. I like handsome submissives and younger love interests. I only read 1v1 romances, not plots focused on careers or ambitions. There are a few recommendations in the comments ().
Top-Dom
I like stories with a top protagonist, especially strong, charismatic, commanding tops who are good in bed. I'm not too particular about dynamics, somewhere in the middle, I guess. I read stories where the top is pampered, where both sides pamper each other, and where the top spoils a well-behaved bottom.
