New York's richest man has a new problem: Ever since the Battle of New York, Tony has suffered from PTSD. Even worse than tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep, is that every time he does fall asleep, he has all kinds of incredibly vivid nightmares.
More infuriating still, he seems to have created a Miss Nightmare in his dreams, a being who rules over everything and delights in tormenting him.
Miss Nightmare greets him with a beaming smile: How about the Conjuring Universe?
Tony shuts down: Sorry, not interested!
Miss Nightmare: The homegrown demon Valak is just what you need!
Tony is on the verge of a breakdown: I'm really just an ADC!!!
Miss Nightmare: Once upon a time, there was an Iron Man who was haunted by a ghost...
Tony has given up on life: Please, just act like a normal person!
Many, many years later, Tony no longer has nightmares.
He has plenty of companions. His love life may not have blossomed, but at least he is no longer alone.
Now and then, he thinks of those nightmares that scared away all his anxiety, and finds himself strangely wistful. But it's been a long time since he had a nightmare, not since he recovered from PTSD.
Later still, the fate of the world rests between his two fingers. Tony thinks that his sacrifice will bring everything to an end.
Before he closes his eyes for the last time, the person who vanished so long ago reaches out a hand to him. "The end is part of the journey, too."
He takes that hand. "All right, but don't leave me halfway through this time."
"I never did." The "ghost" he had only belatedly fallen in love with grips his hand, finally relieved. "I love you three thousand times."
