The first time Yan Yan saw Song Chi, he was catching up on sleep in his dorm room, his shirt riding up, one long leg bent, and a book on Mechanical Engineering covering his face.

At the sound of someone entering, he opened his eyes and stared at Yan Yan for a long moment without saying a word.

Yan Yan was the one who greeted him. "Hi, senior. Do you know where my brother is?"

It wasn't until Yan Li returned that Song Chi let out his frustration. "Are you trying to get me killed? Don't bring your sister here."

Yan Li laughed. "You wouldn't do anything to her. I'm not worried."

Later, Yan Li was selected for an overseas exchange program. Before leaving, he told Song Chi, "You know my family's situation. Keep an eye on my sister for me."

Song Chi ignored him. A month later, Yan Yan showed up at the entrance to his university classroom, asking everyone she saw, "Excuse me, do you know Song Chi from the Mechanical Engineering department?"

Song Chi came out, his face cold. "What do you want?"

The little girl gazed at him through misty eyes. "Could you come to my parent-teacher meeting? I couldn't get through to you. Did you block me?"

As she spoke, tears rolled down her cheeks, and everyone passing by kept turning to look.

Song Chi's expression stiffened. His voice was low and impatient. "Why are you crying?"

Just as the floodgates seemed about to open, he quickly changed his tune. "No, my SIM card just got switched when my phone was stolen."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"If you're lying, you're a puppy."

"Dare to seal it with a pinky promise?"

Song Chi sighed and held out his hand. As Yan Yan hooked her pinky around his, she said, "You can't be a puppy."

One night, Yan Yan finished class and couldn't get in touch with Song Chi. At ten thirty, after he still couldn't reach her, he called the police. He'd just left the station when he saw Yan Yan emerge from a karaoke bar, looking dazed.

Usually so composed, Song Chi flew into a rage that night. He pulled her away with a dark expression and wouldn't give in no matter how much she cried. There wasn't a hint of a smile on his face.

By the time she stopped crying, Yan Yan had fainted from hyperventilation-induced alkalosis. When she woke up, the first thing she said to Song Chi was, "I'm the only one at home."

"Is that why you don't want to go home?"

She nodded.

"And why your grades have been dropping?"

She nodded.

Song Chi fell silent and smoked a whole pack of cigarettes on the balcony.

When he came back, his voice was hoarse, as if he'd made up his mind. "Move in with me. It'll be closer to your school."

Song Chi's studio was right next to Yan Yan's high school.

Four months later, with Yan Yan's college entrance exams approaching, Yan Li came back from out of town and couldn't find her. In a panic, he charged into Song Chi's studio.

"Song Chi, you bastard! Where's my sister?"

He couldn't find her anywhere. Under a blue plaid bedding set in the bedroom, there was a person-shaped lump.

Yan Li yanked the covers off, ready to yell, but all he saw was a fuzzy rabbit-ear hair clip.

Yan Yan looked at her brother timidly, not daring to say a word.

Just then, Song Chi came back from outside with barbecue. He even had a matching pair of rabbit ears clipped to his head?

Seeing Yan Li, he calmly set everything down, sat gently beside Yan Yan, and patted her. With a faint smile, he said, "Why are you sleeping in the wrong bed?"

Three minutes later, Yan Li finally caught up. "What's going on?"

Song Chi said, "Nothing. Your sister's stressed about studying, so she got herself a pet to help her relax."

Yan Li: "?" Where's the pet?

Yan Yan: "??"

Song Chi pressed his lips together. "Me."
