Me and My Monster Neighbors

The protagonist is human, but accidentally falls into a society of monsters and struggles to survive in the cracks. After discovering that his neighbors include a black bear spirit, a leopard spirit, a fox spirit, and a whole host of villains from mythology... the protagonist often feels out of place because he is too normal, and spends every day trembling as he pretends to be a little monster, too. In the world of monsters, pregnant women temporarily lose their magic. So the protagonist picks up a stone egg, tucks it under his clothes, and pretends to be pregnant when he goes out. Unable to hunt for food, the protagonist applies to the community for hardship assistance, claiming that being a single mother is difficult. When dining with his neighbors, the protagonist dares not drink blood or eat raw meat, so he pretends to have severe morning sickness and unusual tastes, eating only cooked meat. After carrying the baby for a year with no sign of labor, the protagonist tells everyone that stone spirits have to be pregnant for a hundred years before their due date. In short, every day the neighbors sigh over the protagonist’s arduous journey as a mother who grows stronger for her child. Later, the stone egg the protagonist has tucked under his clothes hatches into a plump little black-and-gold snake. In tears, the protagonist explains to his neighbors: Actually, I was forced by a great monster back then. I don’t know who the child’s father is, and I didn’t even know my poor child was a little mixed-breed. Later still, the neighbors discover that the little mixed-breed kid of the poor family next door has transformed into a purebred black dragon who can conquer heaven and earth. He doesn’t just want to conquer heaven and earth, he also wants to bed... The neighbors are stunned! But faced with the black dragon’s overwhelming strength, they can do nothing to help. All they can do is shed floods of tears over the protagonist’s heartbreaking life as a monster (human). The protagonist’s name is Xu Lele (pronounced le). The story takes place in an international, multicultural setting. It is neither xuanhuan nor Western fantasy, and any plot you can or can’t imagine might happen... Blurb written on February 2, 2019. (I haven’t figured out what the sapling will do when it grows. My initial estimate is: absolutely nothing.) Day one. The protagonist acts cool and goes to great lengths to be nice to the top; the top stays expressionless and does everything possible to be nice to the protagonist. Their kindness cancels each other out, so the protagonist earns no points. The protagonist: “...” Day two. The protagonist secretly goes out of his way to be nice to the top; the top secretly goes out of his way to be nice to the protagonist. Their kindness cancels each other out, so the protagonist earns no points. The protagonist: “...” And so the two end up going all out to be nice to each other, considerate to an almost infuriating degree. The onlookers say, “Here, have some dog food.” The protagonist breaks down: “You mustn’t be so nice to me! You can only accept my kindness! Even if you want to be nice to me, you can’t be nicer to me than I am to you!” The top hears these tongue-twisting words and interprets them as: I really like you, much more than you like me! The top smiles indulgently, deeply moved. Maybe the top’s name is Yu Ren. The System could also be called “I Am for Ren Ren, Ren Ren Is for Me.” Theme: In a monster world where brutality and cruelty are honored while kindness and purity are shameful, the protagonist seeks to prove that goodness is worthwhile. He holds fast to the right path, and in the end proves that his very existence is the best evidence of goodness.
