After transmigrating, before Liu Fu had even opened her eyes, she heard the System chattering away, assigning her a task: she was the heroine of a tragic romance and had to follow the original plot, living a life adrift like duckweed, soaked in tears and blood.
She reached into her own head, yanked out the System, and beat it senseless. Just as she was about to wipe out the deranged domineering CEO male lead, the indecisive second male lead, the womanizing and faithless third male lead, and the whole annoying lot in one fell swoop, the System burst into tears: “No! If you don’t live out the heroine’s life, the world will reject you, and then we’ll all die!”
Liu Fu: Tsk. What a pain.
Reluctantly, she kept some of the plot intact, right up to the point when she was to be betrothed to the fourth male lead, a powerful regional governor.
In the original story, this supporting male character, born a slave, was crude, short-tempered, dark, and suspicious. Liu Fu had originally planned to strike at the root of the problem...
But when she met him, she changed her mind.
That face, that body...
Crude and violent? Not a chance. That’s what you call wild and hot!
Dark and suspicious? No problem. She wasn’t normal to begin with. The more he tried to figure her out, the faster he’d go mad. Either way, she had nothing to lose.
Sure enough, after staying by her side for long enough, her bargain-bin husband gradually lost his mind. He often watched her all night, afraid she’d fail to survive her tribulation and be struck by lightning, or that she’d ascend to immortality and fly away... But all in all, he treated her very well.
Years later, the final point of fate she had to fulfill was to make the emperor regret everything and leave the empress’s seat empty for her.
As the two armies faced off, with a blade pressed to her throat, Liu Fu thought: This emperor who would pine for her for the rest of his life didn’t have to be the original male lead, did he?
So she unleashed her power without hesitation.
Flowers of flesh bloomed in an instant. That day, endless red clouds blotted out the sky, shattering the final chain of fate.
The throne changed hands.
Liu Fu, who should have retired after accomplishing her goal, couldn’t leave after all.
She couldn’t understand how her bargain-bin husband had managed to find her, unrecognizable, in a pile of corpses. Could it be that “I’d recognize you even if you were reduced to ashes” wasn’t an exaggeration, but a statement of fact?
Reader’s guide:
The heroine has a bad personality, but she has the right to be selfish.
A touch of cosmic horror in an ancient-style setting. Why isn’t cosmic horror among the tags? Because selecting it would put the novel in the epic fantasy category. I do write a lot of fantasy mash-ups, but this one really isn’t one.
Theme: Defy fate and break free of your chains.
