My Dearest Mr. Bo

When A Wu was fifteen, a Mr. Bo moved into the old family home. Mr. Bo was frail and sickly, and people said he wouldn't live past twenty-four. A Wu thought it was such a shame. Mr. Bo was very handsome, with gentle eyes and brows. When he leaned back in a wicker chair and read, he was like a spring breeze beneath a bright moon, or plum wine flowing gently. A Wu thought that someone so handsome deserved to have a better life while he was still alive. A Wu tried everything she could to be good to Mr. Bo. She brought him food and things to play with. But one day, when she ran back with plum wine freshly brewed by the old woman in town, hoping to make him happy, Mr. Bo was nowhere to be found in the old house. She asked her uncle, "Where's Mr. Bo?" Her uncle said, "Mr. Bo went home." A Wu thought Mr. Bo had probably gone home to prepare for his own funeral. For a long time afterward, A Wu was a little downcast. After a new year passed, Mr. Bo was twenty-four. She thought he must have died. She was heartbroken. Later, A Wu gradually grew up, always believing Mr. Bo was dead. She mourned him on her own, remembering to bring his favorite pastries to his grave every Qingming Festival. But one day, when she was sent to an antique shop in Xiping, she saw her Mr. Bo again. She said, "Weren't you dead?" Mr. Bo asked her, "Who said I was dead?" A Wu said, "Everyone said you died when you were twenty-four!" Mr. Bo listened, then used a finger to wipe away the candied-hawthorn crumbs she'd stolen and forgotten to clean off the corner of her mouth. Smiling, he said, "I haven't even had my A Wu yet. How could I bear to die?"
