Heavy Fog

A heavy fog, and the awakening of the wild.

On a rare foggy day, school is canceled and students are forbidden to go outside.

But some students don’t listen.

For example, Lin Wu is climbing over the school wall.

For example, Wang Ye is being confessed to by the school belle.

So Lin Wu, perched on the wall, hears the most badass rejection in history

School belle: I like you.

Wang Ye: Sorry.

School belle: Why?

Wang Ye: It’s not you, it’s me.

School belle: Don’t tell me you’re going to use that tired old excuse, “I don’t like women.”

Wang Ye: I don’t like people.

Three days later, the fog lifts.

Lin Wu discovers that he’s suddenly developed incredible athletic abilities, and that every night, he wants to sing to the moon.

His classmates and teachers have all undergone different changes too. As the strange phenomenon known as “wild awakening” spreads across the world with wave after wave of dense fog, more and more people are affected.

Lin Wu: Just as you said, now people all over the world are becoming less and less human.

① In this story, “wild awakening” means that humans suddenly awaken animal traits. Different people awaken traits from different animal families, and gain some of that animal’s athletic abilities or behavioral habits. This doesn’t change their human nature, though, so they still have to study hard at school and work diligently at their jobs. Yes, it’s a positive and uplifting story! (Gets smacked away…)

Thirty years after the fog, society on Earth has changed completely.

Humans are divided from birth into two groups: “ordinary awakened” and “beast-transforming awakened.”

Ordinary awakened: They gain some of the athletic abilities or behavioral habits of their awakened animal species, but their bodies remain human.

Beast-transforming awakened: They can turn their bodies into animals and back into humans.

But there is actually a third, more advanced form of awakening: partial transformation.

Through training, beast-transforming awakened can keep their bodies between human and animal forms. For example, they can have human bodies while growing animal ears and tails.

In this partially transformed state, awakened people can combine the advantages of both their “human” and “animal” forms and maximize their abilities.

This is the story of a little fox and a sika deer in this world.
