Mr. Ghost's Treasure [The Phantom of the Opera]

Afra became a blind little beggar. The childless circus director adopted her, and the destitute orphan became the apple of a middle-aged couple's eye. The children in the troupe crowded around her, but Afra stubbornly gravitated toward the gloomy, reclusive boy. Later, the director's wife became pregnant. Her once-gentle adoptive mother scolded her coldly, her kind adoptive father drove her away with a whip, and her once-friendly companions mocked and ridiculed her. She thought she'd lost everything. But the boy who shunned humanity suddenly went mad, standing in front of her with a bloodied blade in his hand. He wouldn't let anyone come near her. · When he rejected the little beggar, he thought spitefully, I bet she'll cry this time. But when the little beggar sobbed so hard she could barely breathe, he thought: I should really kill the people who made her sad. Later, the little beggar died. He would never again hear the girl call him sweetly with a smile: "Erik." The fire burned all night, consuming the entire circus. He put on the mask the little beggar had made for him, and never took it off again. [Reading Guide] 1.
