In 2032, the Information Age betrayed humanity. At the same time, a colossal metal tree of unknown origin burst from the ground. Satellites in near orbit failed completely, and every piece of military hardware made after the twenty-first century went out of control. The disasters they brought reduced the population on the ground to one percent of what it had been, reshuffling the world. The tree kept growing, and the habitable areas grew smaller and smaller. Twenty-two years later. In the Arctic Circle, aboard a cargo ship sailing from Murmansk to Canada, Ling met a young man. This is a reckoning for the sins of the past. Multiple protagonists, no elite characters, no privileged characters, no power-trip plotlines. One-on-one romance, with lots of military elements. 2. The worldbuilding is original. This is an alternate timeline in which the Soviet Union and the United States discovered a third life-form during the Cold War. Entirely fictional and unrelated to reality. 3. The author has an undergraduate degree, so there may be scientific inaccuracies in the story. Friendly, well-reasoned corrections with evidence are welcome, though there are many things I may not be able to explain or fix, orz. 4. Please don't judge any character or decision in the story by modern values or ways of thinking. 5. They start off already very fond of each other; pseudo-age-gap romance [the biggest spoiler in the whole story]. 6. It's fine if you don't understand the prologue. Skip straight to Chapter One and start reading. It'll make sense when you come back to it later. 7. I want to write about giant mechs. Humanoid forms are romantic! Don't argue with me about this, and don't say things like legs are just for decoration and people in high places wouldn't understand!
