Ode to Joy: When Guan Guan Meets Uncle Tan

Guan Ju'er is one of only two of the five women in the novel who grew up in a normal family. Unlike the warmhearted, innocent Qiu Yingying, she is quiet and reserved, and treats others kindly. She seems easy to read at a glance, yet she is also the only girl in the show whose strong personality and interests are never revealed. She is like a clear spring, pure on the surface but hiding an abyss.

She likes Tan Zongming, played by Jin Dong. He is more mature and levelheaded than his portrayal in the novel suggests, and perhaps he has seen plenty of the world's splendor. But if he met ordinary Guan Guan, and observed her closely, he would discover the kindness and insight beneath her unassuming exterior. The heroine is a little different from the Guan Guan in Ode to Joy. I just wanted to use this character to flesh out the Guan Guan I imagine, especially since her mother is played by the actress who plays the eldest sister in The Disguiser. The eldest sister being Ming Lou's future mother-in-law in the modern day was also a major reason I started writing this. The early chapters follow the plot of Ode to Joy, while the later chapters take more liberties, but the overall story still follows the plot of Ode to Joy.
