A Light Snow Falls in Jiangnan

In early spring that year, a snowfall in Jiangnan blanketed the gray roof tiles, while wintersweet bent beneath the weight of its blooms. Through the steam rising from the tea table, he glanced at her and said nothing.

Only later did she realize that a whole world lay within that single glance.

She thought he was merely the quiet eldest grandson of the Gu family's main branch, someone she ought to call "Big Brother." She had no idea that he had left home at fifteen, started a business at twenty, and returned at twenty-nine, and that every road he had traveled over the years had led to her.

Snow rarely falls in Jiangnan, but every snowfall came during the gentlest years they shared.

"New wine froths green, a little red-clay stove glows."

Snow falls over Jiangnan. Won't you join me for a cup?
