During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period, He Xiang, a lovely and graceful singer and dancer, and Lang Yue, a handsome, carefree, and talented young man, grew up together as childhood sweethearts. By chance, He Xiang is chosen to become a palace dancer. King Goujian of Yue is imposing, ambitious, gentle, and passionate. The dancers each have their own designs on him, and Feng Pin falls in love with him at first sight. When Feng Pin discovers that Goujian has a special affection for He Xiang, jealousy drives her to try to kill her. She tricks He Xiang into entering a valley crawling with deadly snakes. He Xiang is bitten and poisoned, but Lang Yue saves her. For the sake of restoring his kingdom, Goujian abandons He Xiang and presents the dancers to King Fuchai of Wu. Fuchai arranges for Feng Pin to marry Goujian. Wounded in body and spirit, and with her heart turned to ash, He Xiang has no desire to please Fuchai. But the violent, arrogant, and self-important Fuchai is captivated by her sorrow and takes her by force. The love and hatred between them become a journey through breaking the ice. Five years later, He Xiang receives Lang Yue's fifth letter. In it, Lang Yue tells her that he was poisoned by a snake while saving her and died four years ago. He Xiang realizes how much Lang Yue loved her and is overcome with grief. Goujian launches a major attack on Wu, and Fuchai is defeated. Before taking his own life, Fuchai bids He Xiang farewell and hopes she can return to her homeland. The next day, the city falls. Goujian summons He Xiang and promises to make her his consort. He Xiang dances for him on a nine-tiered lotus platform. When the dance ends, she leaps from the platform and is lost beneath the rippling waters of the Qing River.
