1.
Jiang Tu never expected to run into the boy next door from her childhood at her boyfriend's welcome-home party.
In her memory, he had always been a gentle, modest boy.
Now he wore a suit and tie, never smiled, and moved with ease through the decadent social scene, his presence cold and commanding.
His scrutinizing gaze suddenly landed on her. She hurriedly looked away,
thinking he probably no longer recognized her. Better not to get ahead of herself.
Lu Qingze never took his eyes off Jiang Tu's face. He turned to the man beside her and asked,
“Ge Chuan, who is this?”
“Oh, Big Brother Lu, this is my fiancée.”
Cheng Gechuan put an arm around Jiang Tu's smooth, snowy shoulder.
“What do you think? Isn't she beautiful?”
The man's brow furrowed slightly, his eyes darkening.
He stared straight at the hand resting inappropriately on the girl's shoulder,
his Adam's apple bobbing as the air around them grew heavy.
Jiang Tu felt that strange, gloomy gaze pressing down on her
and grew uncomfortable for no clear reason. She quietly moved her boyfriend's hand away.
She held out her hand. “Hello, I'm Jiang Tu.”
A crooked, almost wicked smile touched Lu Qingze's lips. “Little white rabbit, long time no see. We meet again at last.”
The man returned to his quiet, empty home.
In a darkened room,
under the moonlight slanting through the floor-to-ceiling windows,
the girl's innocent, sweet face appeared once more.
He fantasized about her, his hand moving down of its own accord until his expression became strained.
Lu Qingze stared dazedly at the white wall and murmured, “Jiang Tu, from now on, you can only be mine.”
2.
Jiang Tu always wore that white dress. From afar, she looked like a cloud floating through the rain, like a dampened ball of cotton candy.
“Brother Qingze, it's raining. Aren't you going to use an umbrella?”
She called out to him in her clear, bright voice, rising onto her feet in her little black leather shoes.
Stretching her arm out, she struggled to hold the umbrella over him, trying to shelter him from the wind and rain with her small body.
The boy's eyes were gloomy. He looked toward his home without saying a word.
Water dripped in a steady stream from his hair, which clung to his face, and his mud-covered white sneakers were so heavy he could barely move.
Jiang Tu followed his gaze and looked into the distance, but saw nothing.
She had never seen Lu Qingze wear an expression like that.
“Brother, are you sad? Would you like some candy?”
The sweet scent of lemon candy reached Lu Qingze's nose, a smell that belonged only to Jiang Tu.
When he didn't respond, Jiang Tu gathered her courage, clung to him, peeled off the wrapper, and stuffed the candy into his mouth.
“Is it sweet?”
Lu Qingze pressed his lips together, then finally answered, “Mm. It's sweet.”
“Don't be sad, Big Brother. TuTu will stay with you and be your little friend forever.”
Years later, everyone asked why he was so devoted to Jiang Tu. He always smiled and said nothing.
Only he knew that Jiang Tu had slowly turned the moldy patch in his heart, festering for twenty-six years, into the moon.
Blurb for Beneath the Yuan River:
1.
Wen Yuan spent four years plotting her way into becoming Su Yanli's “wife.”
But his “stepson,” who wasn't related to him by blood, seemed to see through the obedient facade to who she really was.
He couldn't stand her and made things difficult for her at every turn.
Immature and rude, he stepped on the engagement ring his father had given her.
He used cruel jokes as an excuse to make her drink glass after glass of wine.
His gaze brimmed with endless scorn,
and every word he said mocked her as his “little stepmother.”
Later, Su Yanli died in a car accident, leaving her a “widow.”
Bound by an agreement, she had no choice but to live under the same roof as Yuan Hengyu.
2.
On the rainy night she fell out with Su Yanli,
Wen Yuan slapped him hard and finally snapped:
“Yuan Hengyu, I didn't marry your father to be your housekeeper.”
The boy's long, slender fingers touched his freshly slapped left cheek. He gazed at her with longing
and said something that made her heart pound.
“Wen Yuan, what else do I have to do before you'll look at me?”
3.
Su Yanli had known all along why Wen Yuan had accepted his proposal. But he was a born gambler,
and wanted to see how far things would go.
So he indulged her at every turn,
until the situation spiraled out of control,
until he realized Yuan Hengyu was united with her against him,
until he discovered that he... had fallen in love with her.
He had thought she was walking into his trap, step by step.
He had meticulously planned every part of it,
never imagining he would ensnare himself as well.
By the time he was in too deep, there was no turning back.
Theme: What looks like a story of taking someone by force is really about two people saving each other.
