When a military coup broke out in her homeland, You Jiazhi was studying in Beijing. International news reported that she had returned home on a private jet. After mourning her late father and brother, she was placed under house arrest by the new leader.
The young general had once been her servant. Rumors said he had suffered abuse and humiliation as a boy. Once he came to power, he imprisoned her at the top of a tower, completely cut off from the outside world.
No one knew that, whenever night fell and all was quiet, the most powerful ruler in the country would secretly climb to the private chamber at the top of the tower. He would kneel before You Jiazhi, bow his shoulders, and press his straight nose against the tips of her shoes in adoration.

When You Jiazhi was twelve, she pardoned a beautiful boy who was about to be executed.
His bony spine showed beneath his skin as the guards forced him to kneel and serve as the little princess's footstool.
From then on, Ruan Shunan became her dog.
