In the mid-nineteenth century, biologists got such an opportunity in England. In Manchester (an industrial city in the UK), there are countless white moths living. In the past, they were completely mixed with the white trees in this area, making them difficult for birds to find and kill. Among these white moths, there are a small number of black variants, which are easily spotted by predators. Therefore, the number of black moths that survive and continue to reproduce is very small, but due to industrialization, soot blackens the trees, making the white moths easy to prey on. The black moths, however, get the best chance of surviving long enough to reproduce. Fifty years later, their number had increased from less than one percent to ninety-nine percent.
