A Nineteenth-Century Romance

A damp, chilly wind, carrying the distinctive mist of the British Isles, slipped through the gap in the floor-to-ceiling window and brushed Wen Yu's cheek.

The moment she opened her eyes, she was utterly bewildered.

Just a second ago, she had been curled up in her twenty-first-century apartment, wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot milk tea and unwinding with a documentary about Victorian Britain. She had merely lowered her head to shift position when the world spun around her. When she opened her eyes again, everything was completely unfamiliar.

A crystal chandelier hung from a ceiling adorned with intricate plasterwork. Warm golden light spread softly across a vintage velvet sofa and a full-length mirror with a gilded frame. The air was filled with the mellow scents of old wooden furniture, dried flowers, and a faint trace of fireplace embers, an elegant, weighty atmosphere unique to the homes of nineteenth-century British aristocrats.
