With nowhere else to turn, Shen Changpu went to the Wei family with a token in hand.
She hoped to trade her life-saving favor to the eldest son, Wei Qusui, for money to find her relatives in Jiankang.
The refined young master had an air of nobility, his voice cold as he said, "How amusing. You actually dare try to fool me."
Shen Changpu never imagined he would deny it. Not only did he refuse to acknowledge her, he even ordered his men to forcibly take away the bracelet she had brought as proof.
Fortunately, the young master's kind stepmother saved her hand, and she was allowed to stay at the manor.
The lady kindly warned her, "The eldest young master despises commoners. Give up that unrealistic hope of yours as soon as you can. Once we reach Jiankang, perhaps the Wei family can find a suitable match for you."
Shen Changpu understood.
The young master had lost his memory and thought she was a fraud. Why would she make a fool of herself by throwing herself at him?
But Wei Qusui refused to let her go so easily.
As the heir of the century-old Wei clan, Wei Qusui held a lofty position in his family. Even before the emperor, he was allowed to wear his sword and shoes into the palace.
If the head of the Wei family was away, he had the final say.
Shen Changpu was afraid he would cruelly throw her out or refuse to let her travel to Jiankang with the Wei family.
So whenever Wei Qusui questioned her, she made up a story about how they fell in love at first sight, fell even deeper the second time they met, and pledged themselves to each other the third time. Then she put on a show of someone betrayed in love, yet considerate of his amnesia.
Shen Changpu admitted that she held a little grudge, and had deliberately said those things to make the immaculate young nobleman uncomfortable and disgusted.
He looked down on commoners, and he looked down on her.
She really had saved his life, yet he had repaid her kindness with ingratitude.
Gradually, the young master's gaze shifted from disgust to confusion, then from confusion to inner conflict.
By day, he curled his lips in a cold sneer. "Still lying to me? Have you thought about how you want to die?"
Late at night, he sat silently by her bed, tears slipping down his cheeks as he demanded, "Why did you turn me into this?"
Things seemed to be taking a strange turn.
The young master seemed to have gone mad.
Fortunately, she was about to marry someone else.
/
Shen Changpu never made it to the altar.
She had clearly admitted in front of everyone that everything besides saving his life had been a lie.
They had never been in love, nor had they pledged themselves to each other.
She had even sworn she would never appear before him again.
But Wei Qusui still refused to let her go. When he heard this, the veins at his jade-white temples bulged with rage, and he looked as if he wanted to kill her on the spot.
/
Wei Qusui had inherited his ancestor's name. He had always cultivated himself to be pure and kept himself righteous, rejecting all trivial emotions so that the disgraceful deeds of his ancestors would not be repeated.
But ever since meeting Shen Changpu, he had felt all sorts of emotions deep within himself that he should never have had.
Hatred, resentment, fury...
A mad, obsessive hatred.
He hated her so much he wanted to tear her apart, skin and bone.
He would wear her skin, swallow her flesh, and hold her bones in his arms.
She had turned him into this strange creature, so naturally she had to stay by his side forever.

"Didn't I tell you I could never fall in love with you?"
"Why do you keep saying those things to tempt me?"
