Wu Rao is a musician kept by the Zhang family.
She knows her status is lowly. Even though she has feelings for the Zhang household's eldest young master, Zhang Xuezhong, she has never dared to dream of being with him.
Until one day, she suddenly awakens to the truth and learns that she is a supporting female character in a novel, a mere tool whose purpose is to show how unattainable the male lead, Zhang Xuezhong, is.
According to the original plot,
less than half a year from now, she will die of illness.
While she is alive, Zhang Xuezhong does not even know who she is. Then, just before she dies, she finally cannot resist hiding away a portrait of him, hoping to take it into her coffin and sleep beside it.
But word of this gets out. When Zhang Xuezhong learns of her feelings, the dignified young master of a noble family looks at her without the slightest emotion. He burns the portrait and says in a calm voice, "There is a gulf between high and low. Know your place."
From then on, Wu Rao becomes a laughingstock throughout the capital. Even after she dies, people say she was a toad lusting after a swan, too stupid to know her own worth.
At this moment,
Wu Rao is frail with illness. She has only just hidden away his portrait.
Thinking about the plot, the more she dwells on it, the angrier she becomes. At last, she tears up the portrait and decides to do something.
Zhang Xuezhong never imagined that on an ordinary day, a lowly musician would stop him. She says she has something on him and uses it to threaten him, demanding that he do what she wants.
He assumes she is merely asking for some money or valuables.
But when he frowns and bends closer, putting his ear near hers,
he hears the woman say, "Kiss me."
Wu Rao is going to die, but she cannot accept it. Why should her love be called an impossible fantasy by him?
She knows the plot of the book, so she uses his weakness to threaten him and toy with him. She makes this refined, highborn young master bend down and kiss her, call her "dearest" in front of everyone, and even risk the outrage of the whole world by marrying her, a musician of lowly status.
Watching him struggle to endure it while having no choice but to obey, Wu Rao is satisfied. At last, on the day of their wedding, she dies content. On their wedding day, when he lifts the bridal veil, she leaves him with a cold corpse.
*
Everyone knows that Zhang Xuezhong is a man of noble character, yet he has been coerced into marrying a lowly musician.
She is like a speck of mud clinging to him. Zhang Xuezhong does not like her, but he has no choice but to put up with her.
On their wedding day, before the musician can even exchange bows with him, she dies alone.
Everyone thinks he will be glad, but no one expects that the wedding will go ahead that night. With bloodshot eyes, the man acts as if she has not died, obsessively holding a corpse as he bows to Heaven and Earth and pays respects to his ancestors. Afterward, he shuts himself away. The servants attending outside his window can always hear him murmuring softly, as though speaking to his newlywed wife.
After Wu Rao dies, she cannot be reincarnated.
She thought those absurd six months had been a dream, and that everything would end the moment she died. But she never expected her soul to be pulled back to the side of her own corpse. Only then does she discover that Zhang Xuezhong has never buried her.
He grows dark and mad, keeping watch over her remains day and night and sleeping beside them. He feeds her with his own blood, his eyes blood-red. "You really won't come back to life?"
He holds her corpse and kisses her neck. "Then I'll die with you. I only stayed alive so I could die for love with you."
