Xue Yuming was a bandit with incredible strength, yet so poor she couldn't rub two coins together.
In her hardest year, a noblewoman came to her with a thousand taels of silver and told her to marry her son-
Though she called it marriage,
it was really more like discipline.
Xue Yuming only found out later that the woman was the Marchioness, who had an incorrigible younger son named Zhao Sui.
The young man was strikingly handsome but a genuine spoiled playboy. Now that he was of marriageable age, the Marchioness wanted to find him a wife who could keep him in line.
And so Xue Yuming gained a husband.
On their wedding day,
Zhao Sui brought out a big rooster to take her place in the wedding ceremony, expecting to make a fool of her.
He never imagined that she would pluck the rooster on the spot and make a feather duster out of it.
Then she chased Zhao Sui around and beat him soundly all night.
*
Zhao Sui was highborn, but had a terrible reputation. He was famously lazy and disobedient. By the time he reached marriageable age, he had offended every noblewoman in the capital, cursing out each one who came to see him, whether she came alone or with a companion.
He thought that way, no one would dare marry him.
But he never expected his mother to find him a bandit bride!
She was a force of nature.
She tore up his storybooks, set his fighting roosters free, and chased him down to beat him whenever they disagreed.
At last, Zhao Sui could take no more. He slapped a divorce agreement onto the table. "How much did my mother pay you? I'll pay double. Divorce me!"
The girl merely raised an eyebrow. "We'll divorce once you've earned a title."

Xue Yuming always knew Zhao Sui looked down on her.
But if it weren't for the Marchioness, she would have starved to death, so she was determined to whip Zhao Sui into shape as a way of repaying her.
And so,
she stayed by Zhao Sui as he went from a lazy playboy to a man of distinction, making a name for himself far and wide.
The day Zhao Sui was appointed a Junior General,
she decided her task was complete, left him a divorce agreement, and returned to the stronghold to become a bandit again.
She thought she would never cross paths with Zhao Sui again.
But then,
one rainy night not long afterward, the Junior General showed up at her door.
The young man was soaked, looking like an abandoned puppy as he pleaded, "You can't wait until I've become a better man and then leave me."
# Actually, from the very day they married, he'd thought she looked especially beautiful when she was beating people up.
