Ripples

When Xu Lianyi's family was desperate, the Xie family gave them a large sum of money, just in time to pull them through. Even after the debt was repaid, the Xu family remembered that kindness for the rest of their lives.

Though their families were worlds apart and the Xu family had little to offer in return, every year, a few days before the Spring Festival, they would visit with some local specialties from home as a token of their gratitude.

That year, Xu Lianyi came of age. Her father told her, "Go and get to know the family. As long as they don't mind, you should visit every year from now on."

Xu Lianyi nodded, made the long journey, and knocked on the door of the villa.

But this year, the mood was tense.

The Xie family's eldest son, Xie Jiaheng, had gone blind.

He sat in his wheelchair, his face blank. The air around him seemed frozen within a one-foot radius.

She swallowed and greeted him softly. "Hello, Uncle and Auntie... Hello, Brother Jiaheng."

His parents welcomed her warmly. As she was leaving, she heard them discussing sending Xie Jiaheng to a care home in the countryside. His temper was terrible, and he was in low spirits. The doctor had recommended a change of scenery, but he kept frowning and refusing to go.

Xu Lianyi hesitated. "The scenery where we live is quite nice. If Brother Jiaheng doesn't mind, he could stay with us for a while. I'm on break right now, so I can... I can look after him."

And so Xu Lianyi followed the Xie family's three luxury cars as they escorted Xie Jiaheng back to the countryside.

Xu Lianyi was ready to do everything for him without complaint, but this young master seemed a little too obedient...
