The first thing Song Ting does after returning to his birth parents' home is go with them to register his household again and change his name to Bai Ting.
He asks, "Was I originally named Ting?"
His father says, "No. You've used this name for thirteen years, so we were afraid you wouldn't be used to a new one."
His original name was Bai Yueheng, taken from the Book of Songs: "Like the waxing moon, like the rising sun." Looking at the note written behind the photo from his hundredth day, Bai Ting holds the album and happily turns to the next page.
Only later does he learn that the child adopted by the Bai family, the one who comforted his parents and filled the void he left, was named Bai Yueheng. He isn't the one who needs to get used to things. His parents and eldest brother are the ones who have grown accustomed to having someone else in the family.
Bai Ting always reminds them of Bai Yueheng, who is studying abroad.
Bai Ting's grades are average, and he barely gets into an ordinary second-tier university. Bai Yueheng excels academically and was the city's top scorer in the college entrance exam that year.
His eldest brother complains, "When my friends ask which university you're at, I can't even give them a straight answer. Are you really my younger brother?"
But Bai Ting was kidnapped and taken to a remote village. Apart from going to school, he had endless farmwork to do every day. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone missing for thirteen years before being found.
Bai Ting has no manners and makes plenty of blunders at home and at banquets. Bai Yueheng, on the other hand, is elegant and refined, a model for his peers since childhood.
His parents discuss it: "Why hasn't he changed after all this time? He's so willful, too. Should we send him abroad to teach him some discipline?"
But he has been away from all this for thirteen years, and spent those years being beaten and berated. If he hadn't been kidnapped, he might not have been as good as Bai Yueheng, but at least he wouldn't be an embarrassment.
Song Ting originally thought that getting into university and leaving the mountains would make everything better. But only after becoming Bai Ting does he realize that the suffering will never end. Song Ting wasn't happy, and neither is Bai Ting.
He was insignificant in the Song family, and now he's just as dispensable in the Bai family.
But at least Bai Ting has a gentle and considerate online partner, someone who understands everything that goes wrong in his life and puts up with all his worries and complaints.
When he is sent abroad, Bai Ting doesn't resist. He and his lover had already arranged to meet at a cafe.
