Lance hated Asians. They were short and sallow, and when they spoke, it sounded like they were reciting bewitching spells. They were strange people with an air of evil about them.
Then Li Zhou appeared and shattered everything he thought he knew.
The first time Lance saw Li Zhou was outside a private club near his school.
Lance was being cornered by a rich heir who had turned nasty after being rejected. Just as the man was about to grab him and force a kiss on him, a tall figure suddenly stepped in front of Lance.
At 190 centimeters, Li Zhou towered like a mountain. His tailored suit emphasized his broad shoulders and narrow waist, giving him an imposing air. He looked down as he grabbed the rich kid by the wrist, making him scream. Terrified, the guy fled in a panic.
Lance suddenly realized that this Asian man was nothing like the ones he'd imagined. But prejudice was hard to shake off, so he sneered in English, "A Chinaman with a hero complex?"
Li Zhou glanced at him as if he were an amusing trinket, then drawled in Chinese, "Pretty idiot."
The syllables sounded strange and hard. Lance couldn't understand them, but for some reason, he thought the man's voice was insanely attractive.
The second time they met was at a luxury goods counter in a mall.
Lance was staring at a limited-edition handbag in the display when a deep voice sounded behind him.
He turned and met Li Zhou's dark eyes. Li Zhou was having an entire row of limited-edition bags wrapped up.
Lance's vanity suddenly got the better of him. He deliberately bumped into Li Zhou and pretended to drop his wallet. "Hey, pick that up for me."
Li Zhou bent to pick it up, his fingertips brushing the back of Lance's hand.
Lance looked up, giving him his most seductive smile. "It's you! Thanks for saving me last time. Can I buy you a coffee to repay you?"
Li Zhou stared at his full lips, a glint of dark amusement flashing in his eyes. In English, he said, "No need. But I'm looking for a companion for a dinner party this weekend. Someone to help me deal with all the boring socializing."
A thousand dollars an hour, with formalwear and jewelry included.
Lance's eyes lit up, and he nodded at once. "Deal!"
He thought it was just a transaction that suited them both: he'd accompany this wealthy Asian man to a dinner party and earn enough to indulge his vanity. But Li Zhou's requests kept getting stranger.
When they were intimate, Li Zhou would hold him by the waist and whisper obscure things in Chinese into his ear, then chuckle at his flushed, bewildered expression.
Lance had approached him for money and connections, yet Li Zhou's hard stare and deep voice made his heart race for no reason.
Lance started secretly learning Chinese. He quietly searched the awkward-sounding phrases on a translation app. In his notebook, he wrote "Li Zhou" in crooked handwriting.
At last, one day, Lance blushed scarlet and grabbed Li Zhou by the sleeve, stammering in awkward Chinese, "I-I like you."
Li Zhou's gaze instantly darkened. He bent down, pinned Lance against the wall, and kissed him hard, whispering in Chinese against his ear, "Baby, from now on, I'll give you everything you want, including myself."
