Sleep Well Tonight

After practical training, a group of medical students who were exhausted to the point of collapse chatted about all sorts of things to take their minds off it.

Someone brought it up, and before long they were all talking about their first loves.

One said they’d spent more than a decade acting like a model student without even holding someone of the opposite sex’s hand.

Another shared a story about a childhood sweetheart.

Tong Rui was the medical school goddess, pursued by people ever since military training began. Everyone was most curious about her romantic history. It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to her, and they urged her to talk about her first love.

She paused for a long moment, her expression calm. “There was this idiot who really liked me back then, but was too embarrassed to say good night. So every day, he’d message me, ‘Sleep well tonight.’ Later, I found out it meant, ‘I love you tonight, and I’ll love you tomorrow night too.’”

“Wow, that’s so romantic,” her classmates exclaimed.

Tong Rui barely reacted. “Then we went our separate ways, and he said good night. After that, it was good night every day, but there was never love again.”

“Did you break up?” someone asked cautiously.

She shook her head. “We were never in a relationship.”

That only made everyone more curious. If they’d never been together, why was there so much romance between them?

Tong Rui rubbed her fingertips together. After a long while, she murmured, “Because he was the stupidest, most clueless jerk in the world.”

Zhu Qingyan had soothed her with good-night messages for two years, until his warmth faded to indifference and then to complete silence.

She never thought they’d meet again like this.

In high school, Zhu Qingyan was a troubled kid everyone had given up on, while Tong Rui was the model class monitor.

Their relationship was just like their seats in class: at opposite ends of a diagonal.

Tong Rui’s feelings for Zhu Qingyan began with her playing the chivalrous heroine, roaming the world to right wrongs on a whim.

Zhu Qingyan’s feelings for Tong Rui began with a frog at the bottom of a well imagining the bright moon.

The moon would never come to him, so he set out to chase it.

He had no idea how long and distant the road would be.

Unrequited love from the male lead, bittersweet ending. Chivalrous class monitor × handsome delinquent and underachiever, also sunshine girl × little bitter melon.
