The Moon Tilts over a Thousand Mountains, and an Old Friend Returns [A Chinese Ghost Story Online]

A fanfiction based on the PC game New Ghost Stories

-

My name is Pu Songling, and I'm an NPC in the PC game New Ghost Stories. My daily duties are to retrieve new players who've fallen beneath the cliffs and bring them to the study to recuperate, then team up with my coworker Xiaodie to guide them through the main story.

One strange player caught my attention. He always logged on late at night, and would log off after saying only a few words.

Other players could finish the story in no time, but he took nearly a month and still couldn't complete it. Even so, he kept logging on without fail.

I couldn't help being curious. When I struck up a conversation with him, I learned that he was seriously ill. He was working desperately to save up for treatment and had no time to play games. But all alone, he found the loneliness unbearable, so he could only log on in his spare moments to find someone to talk to.

After discussing it with Xiaodie, we stopped dragging him along on quests and through the storyline. Instead, we took him sightseeing, helped him relax, and stayed by his side, encouraging him to pursue treatment.

He seemed to be doing better and better, and Xiaodie and I gradually got used to his late-night visits and the way he would suddenly vanish in the middle of a conversation.

But one day, he stopped logging on altogether.

Xiaodie and I waited for him for a long, long time, until I retrieved another unfamiliar new player from beneath the cliff...
