A Summer Night Confession [GB]

[Aloof, world-weary older sister x earnest, taciturn younger brother from the countryside with dark skin | siblings | mutual salvation]

When Jiang Ling was downing her eighteenth can of beer in the living room, someone knocked on the door.

She dragged herself up, kicking aside the empty cans scattered across the floor as she went to answer it. She assumed it was the boyfriend she'd just had a huge fight with, but when she opened the door, she found the young, somewhat awkward face of a boy instead.

It was a sweltering summer night. He wore only a white undershirt for work, revealing muscles tanned dark by the countryside sun. A huge fiberglass sack hung from his shoulder, making him sway under its weight.

He stood stiffly at the door, wiped the sweat from his face, and gingerly called her "big sister," explaining that his family had sent him to deliver something.

Jiang Ling furrowed her brow, unable to understand why the child bride her younger sister had raised back at their rural family home had come to see her in the middle of the night.
