Inspector Hagiwara's Lawyer

Hagiwara Kenji first met Tsukimi when she came to pick up her drunk friend from a mixer.

Later, he happened to overhear that friend, who had attended police academy with them, ask her why she chose to become a lawyer instead of a police officer.

She said, "I want to meet danger, then take it all into my own hands."

Hagiwara was passing by when he heard that. He looked back and saw Tsukimi beneath a streetlamp on the sidewalk, reaching toward the moon. She smiled with a fierce, carefree brightness, vivid and unrestrained, as if life held a million possibilities and none of them could defeat her.

Then Hagiwara heard his own heartbeat.
