I Won’t Choose Between Being Hugely Popular and Utterly Hated

A soon-to-be college student transmigrates into a senior-year art student at Toto University. Ying San skips a stage of her life and plunges straight into Tokyo, where Beika Town exists. By chance, she spots the blond, dark-skinned Rei Furuya through a cafe window.

“...If it would make Miss Ying San happy, would you consider becoming my girlfriend?”

Huh? What's wrong with this Rei Furuya? Didn't they just meet?

Ying San rubs her prickling shoulders. Why does this not feel... very Akai?

She closes her eyes, then opens them. The space around her seems to have changed. Looking at himself in the mirror, Rei Furuya receives a phone call.

“I killed Rum,” says the person on the other end.

His pupils contract. Memories that don't belong to him flood his mind. In this world, Hiro, Hagiwara, Matsuda, and Date are all still alive.

Along with the people and information Rei Furuya cares about, one presence occupies most of his thoughts in the vast, unfamiliar sea of memories: a girl with black hair and pink eyes, Ying San Asagiri.

But why does she know the name Rei Furuya?

So, the leads of this story are Officer Furuya and Ying San. Akai is paired with Furuya.

All five members of the police academy squad survive, but the female lead isn't there to save them.

Early on, there are a few moments with Matsuda that might be mistaken for romantic tension, but it's a misunderstanding. The only real romance is between Ying San and Rei.

Date (muttering): How come all of you have childhood friends?

Tachikawa Shiro (crouched in a corner, drawing circles and muttering): That's too much, just too much. I only blew up a cicada because I wanted to cool down and stop getting bitten by mosquitoes. What did I do wrong? How could they spread such rumors about me?

She said she thought it suited me. It really did smell lovely. Of course, the other, more formal bottle of perfume was nice too.

What I mean is, compared to everyone else, she seems to have gradually become someone special.
