Yuan An was an abandoned child.
Born deaf and mute, he was not accepted by the wealthy Yuan family as a disabled heir. They adopted a son from a collateral branch of the family in his place, swapping the two boys and sending Yuan An to the countryside.
When he was brought back to the Yuan family, he wore only a thin set of old clothes. His hands and feet were bare and red from the cold, but his eyes were bright and so clear it hurt to look at them.
Strangely, despite his lack of clothes and food, he was taller and sturdier than other children his age. Compared to the pampered fake young master, as precious as a kitten, he seemed more like a fluffy little puppy.
He had inherited his parents' best features, too, and was impossibly well-behaved.
But a disability was still a disability.
Yuan An's birth parents loathed him. If their archenemy hadn't cursed their son, they would never have taken this child back.
The butler led him to live in the attic. The servants treated him differently from the others. He was sent to the same elite school as the fake young master, where he was mocked, bullied, and isolated, all to please the fake young master.
He was the real young master, yet they demanded he serve as a substitute to ward off misfortune for the fake one.
Everyone thought he wouldn't be able to endure it. They openly hoped their malice would drive him to a breakdown and suicide, so the ritual would succeed.
But they didn't know that Yuan An didn't care about any of it.
The food the servants deliberately forgot to give him would appear at his bedside. The desk covered in insults would be as good as new the next day.
A classmate who tried to push him down the stairs inexplicably broke a leg.
Within a month, anyone who bullied him or targeted him would suddenly die.
Gradually, no one dared tease him anymore. The parents of his classmates came to him, weeping and begging for forgiveness as they offered him enormous compensation.
Yuan An held the bank cards and smiled shyly and sweetly.
The "accidents" finally stopped.
Yuan An's parents knew nothing about these things. They simply didn't care about him.
It wasn't until the fake young master's health worsened and he was admitted to the hospital that they finally sought out an expert to perform a ritual.
Beside the hospital bed, Yuan An opened his mouth for the first time and clearly said the two words, "Big brother."

Yuan An didn't long for his parents' love because he didn't need it. Ever since he was little, he had known he had a big brother who loved him very, very much.
He could hear "him." "He" taught him to speak, slipping cold fingertips into his throat and massaging his tender vocal cords.
Day after day, year after year, until the day Yuan An learned to speak.
He gave "Big Brother" a sweet smile, soft as a gummy bear.
The being heard his call. Its pitch-black, sticky, invisible tentacles quietly wound their way between the boy's soft, full thighs.
