On an insect planet that had transmigrated into a die, Bai Lan was a rare native male insect.
He had all the common flaws of male insects: cold, world-weary, and sexless. Mating was just a task to him. In fourteen years of marriage to his female spouse, they had produced only one female child.
Then a group of male insects claiming to be from Earth arrived, sparking a live-streaming craze. Novels, games, films, and all kinds of sweet romance entertainment appeared one after another, driving countless female insects wild with enthusiasm.
Bai Lan suddenly realized that people were supposed to fall in love before getting married and laying eggs.
But his female spouse seemed just as indifferent to their marriage as he was. He only climbed into Bai Lan's bed when he needed male pheromones. Even when left covered in wounds, he never complained. The moment he got out of bed, his first act was to set off in the middle of the night and return to the border battlefield for duty.
A marriage between two people who couldn't stand each other was better off ending.
Bai Lan planned to test whether his female spouse actually liked him. If he didn't, Bai Lan was willing to divorce him so they could each go in search of the true love people from Earth talked about.
The first time Bai Lan kissed him, his spouse frowned.
The first time Bai Lan made breakfast, his spouse reacted as if facing an enemy.
The first time Bai Lan took their female child to school, his spouse transferred the child to another school that very day.
He even took their female child with him back to the border. He grew ever more distant, and his replies to Bai Lan's messages were as short as the character limit allowed.
Bai Lan: ...Who says military females naturally love their male spouses? Mine doesn't love me, and he's even taking our child away.
Spouse's perspective:
Reynold had always known his male spouse didn't like him. He was much older than Bai Lan, who had married him for the honor of his family. The egg had been conceived to fulfill the duty of reproduction.
So in fourteen years of marriage, they had only one child.
Until one day, he discovered his male spouse watching a female insect's livestream. The military female was young and alluring, and in the midst of the great cultural wave, she was said to be exactly the type male insects liked.
He followed the livestream. The military female said she liked male insects who cooked for her, and that very day, Bai Lan made him breakfast.
The military female blushed and said she liked being kissed on the cheek by male insects. The next day, Bai Lan kissed his cheek.
His nails dug into his palm, drawing blood. He knew Bai Lan must have someone he loved.
He was only being used for practice.
Before things could get worse, before he lost himself even further and had to surrender his place as spouse, he chose to leave of his own accord with their young child.
A month later, just as Bai Lan's divorce application arrived...
Reynold discovered, bewildered, that he was carrying an egg.
