Heart Demon [Criminal Investigation]

[Top] [Older Man/Younger Man] [Mystery] [Rekindled Romance] [Deliberate Seduction] [The Pursuer's Road to Redemption]

Lu Zheng has worked in criminal investigation for eight years and has never lost a case. That is, until an eighteen-year-old witness tricked him into bed. The next day, Lu was reported and suspended.

During that month, a major incident shook the department: the suspect in the child-molestation and murder case Lu had spent three years investigating was inexplicably released on bail.

On the day he returned to work, Lu mobilized a large force to track down the suspect. They found him dead in a filthy ditch, his face disfigured and deep strangulation marks on his neck.

Lu crouched at the scene for an hour. The killer's method was so clean it looked like a textbook answer. Not a single surveillance camera had caught a thing.

He went back and pored over the case files, revisiting the case he'd spent three years on, the one he'd nearly worn out from reading. The first night after finishing, he smoked three packs of cigarettes.

On the third night, he stubbed out his cigarette and searched his phone for that number. He called, but the line was busy.

Their last call had been the night before his suspension. It had lasted eleven minutes, during which the eighteen-year-old liar had used every trick in the book to lure him home.

He called again. Still busy.

He placed his phone facedown on the desk and never tried again.

Every clue pointed to that eighteen-year-old witness. The kid who had lived in his home for two months, trembled in pain in his arms at night, then reported him and got him suspended the next day.

But the kid had vanished.

His surname was Chu. Chu Xingye.

He took more than Lu Zheng's perfect record with him. He took Lu Zheng's soul, too.
