Ji Yang is sick, the kind of sick that's been diagnosed by a psychologist.
He only enjoys the thrill of the chase. The moment the other person falls for him, his love vanishes completely.
So he only goes after the most difficult targets.
An abstinent professor, a cold CEO, a delicate white lotus... If they're good-looking, he's interested.
He treats pursuit like a hunting game, using every trick in the book and taking what he wants by force. Once the other person finally falls for him and is ready to return his feelings, he walks away without hesitation. He can't even be bothered to sleep with them.
He knows exactly what a scumbag he is, and feels absolutely no remorse about being a playboy.
This time, he sets his sights on his younger uncle, Lu Wangqing, who has no blood relation to the Ji family.
Ten years older than him, warm and refined, composed and self-possessed, like a pool of water that could never be muddied.
Ji Yang wants to see him lose control, go crazy over him, and let a different expression cross that usually impassive face.
So he pretends to run into his uncle in his study, wanders around the kitchen late at night wearing nothing but a shirt, and calls him "Uncle" after a drink at a family dinner...
But Lu Wangqing only looks at him with a kind yet distant gaze, as if he's watching a child misbehave.
"You should go to bed, Ji Yang."
Even as he says it, he calmly turns a page in his book.
Ji Yang thinks: This is a challenge. I like it.
-
Lu Wangqing isn't stupid.
He knows Ji Yang is pursuing him, and he knows Ji Yang has a problem.
Aromantic? Enjoys the chase, but not the outcome?
He looks down at the coffee in his hand and suddenly smiles.
A child is a child. He charges after whatever he wants in a gust of wind, then tosses it aside once it's his. Toys, sports, schoolwork: it's always the same.
But Lu Wangqing isn't a toy, and he won't become an "outcome."
He's the one leading the way, the true master of the hunt.
He accepts the coffee Ji Yang brings him, but neither thanks him nor comments on it, leaving the boy unable to tell whether he likes it.
When Ji Yang knocks on his door late at night, he opens it only a crack, says, "Let's talk tomorrow," then gently closes it again.
When Ji Yang casually brushes his hand, he neither pulls away nor responds, simply letting him touch it as though nothing has happened.
Every time, Ji Yang thinks he's almost won.
Every time, Lu Wangqing makes him feel he's just a little short.
That tiny distance is the first lesson he teaches Ji Yang:
Don't think you're the center of the universe.
-
This time, Ji Yang has really outdone himself.
Before, he never pursued anyone for more than three months. The more enthusiastic their response, the faster he ran. But this time, he's lasted over six months!
But Lu Wangqing is always lukewarm, neither distant nor close, and never gives him a sense of achievement. It's like punching cotton. It's getting less and less fun.
Six months. That's about long enough. He must be getting bored.
That day, he sauntered up to his uncle with his hands in his pockets.
"Uncle, there's something I should tell you. I'm aromantic."
Lu Wangqing only lifted his coffee and blew on it gently, saying nothing.
Ji Yang thought he would forget about it as soon as he turned around, like he always did. But on the third day, at a family dinner, he saw someone new by Lu Wangqing's side.
The man was impeccably dressed and elegant. He leaned down to say something to his uncle, and his uncle... was actually smiling.
It wasn't that "an elder looking at a child" kind of smile he gave Ji Yang. It was the smile of one adult to another, as equals.
Ji Yang nearly crushed the glass in his hand.
He held back for two days. On the third night, he finally kicked open his uncle's door.
"Who's that guy?"
Lu Wangqing was sitting on the sofa reading. He raised his eyes. "A friend."
"What kind of friend?"
"None of your business."
Ji Yang laughed in anger. "How is it none of my business?"
"Aren't you aromantic?"
Those words struck Ji Yang's ears like nails, making his whole body ache.
Ji Yang stared at him, his Adam's apple bobbing as he forced out each word:
"I'm fucking aromantic about you, all right?"
