Everyone knew that Guan Yue, once the most lawless young master of the Guan family, had become a caged songbird kept by Federation Colonel Jiang Xianqing five years ago.
In the first year after Jiang Xianqing forcibly kept him by her side, Guan Yue refused to submit, proud to the point of death. Like a small wolf provoked into a frenzy, he was always ready to bite a chunk out of Jiang Xianqing.
In the second year, Guan Yue learned to lie low, hiding all his hatred in his heart and putting on a compliant expression. He swore that if he ever escaped the cage, he would make Jiang Xianqing pay in blood.
In the third year, Guan Yue stopped talking about revenge. He only wanted to get far away someday, to a place where Jiang Xianqing would never find him, and spend the rest of his life there.
In the fourth year, Guan Yue had been thoroughly tamed. If Jiang Xianqing smiled softly in his ear, his body would go limp despite himself.
In the fifth year, Guan Yue accepted his fate.
He grew his hair long and learned to cook. Before Jiang Xianqing left home, he kissed her lips; whenever she returned, he opened his arms to embrace her. If this was the life he had to live for the rest of his days, then so be it.
But in that fifth year, Guan Yue received news that Jiang Xianqing had died. She had been killed in an accident during a secret mission.
He had suddenly gained the freedom he'd once dreamed of, only to realize he could no longer imagine any kind of future.
Many years later, one of Jiang Xianqing's former comrades found Guan Yue, who was teaching at a university. With her was a girl in a high school uniform. A familiar feeling made Guan Yue's heart pound.
The comrade said, "This is Jiang Xianqing."
"For reasons we don't know, her body, mind, and memories have all regressed to what they were at eighteen," the comrade explained. "Professor Guan, we need you to be her guardian for the time being."
Guan Yue's mind went blank. He stared at the girl and asked without thinking, "Why?"
The comrade fell silent for a moment, sighed, and sent him a file.
"Because you're the most suitable person."
It was a marriage registration record that had already taken effect. The registered parties were him and Jiang Xianqing.
The registration date was the eve of the news of Jiang Xianqing's death.

Guan Yue brought the "eighteen-year-old" Jiang Xianqing home.
The girl stood in the entryway with her head bowed, her hair hiding her expression. She looked quiet and gloomy, nothing like the decisive, domineering, cold-hearted woman in Guan Yue's memories.
Guan Yue found a new pair of slippers for her. At last, she glanced at him and asked softly, "What should I call you?"
At eighteen, Jiang Xianqing didn't know him yet.
"..." Guan Yue hesitated, then said, "Call me... Uncle."
He regretted it as soon as the words left his mouth. The hair on his body stood on end, and just as he was about to correct himself, he heard her quiet, low voice.
"Uncle."
...So well-behaved.
