Small-Town Life of a Commoner Girl:
Jiang Wanzhi transmigrated into the body of a poor girl from an ancient slum. Born with a heart condition, she had to spend every ounce of strength just to stay alive.
Her father was a lame blacksmith, and her mother a cook with night blindness. They worked away from home year-round to pay for her treatment, yet the family remained desperately poor.
When Jiang Wanzhi arrived, her ten-year-old brother was running errands for people to save up for her medicine, while her three-year-old sister had no one to watch her and was so hungry she gnawed on the table leg...
Jiang Wanzhi picked up the little girl and carried her to the kitchen.
The good news: the kitchen had all the utensils she needed.
The bad news: there was only half a sack of flour, five eggs, and a handful of wild garlic.
Jiang Wanzhi rolled up her sleeves and got to work. Before long, fragrant wild garlic and egg pastries were sizzling fresh out of the pan.
The sisters ate with relish. The neighbor's dog howled with envy, while a passerby sniffed the air and poked their head in: "Oh my, what delicious thing is the Jiang family making? It smells so good!"
When her parents returned and took a bite, tears streamed down their faces. "Heaven has been kind. Our girl can walk again, and she can cook, too."
Her brother came home, finished one, and burst into tears. "Big Sis's pancakes are so good. Sniff, are there any more?"
After that, Jiang Wanzhi set up a food stall at the nearby docks.
Chive pastries, fresh meat pies, shrimp wontons, big lamb dumplings...
Whenever she opened her stall, the fragrance carried far and wide. Porters, boatmen, peddlers, neighbors, and traveling merchants all followed their noses to buy something.
Before long, hers was the busiest food stall on the entire dock.
Once the family had money, her father's leg was healed, her mother's night blindness disappeared, her brother went to school, and her little sister had snacks to her heart's content. They even moved into a spacious new home.
Jiang Wanzhi was the head of the household, and no matter what she did, her family supported her without question.
Jiang Wanzhi thought it would be lovely to live peacefully and happily with her family until they were all old.
There was just one thing she found strange.
One day, dockside thugs came to her stall to demand protection money and insulted her.
Constable Lu, who was said to be a man of considerable standing but had been sent to patrol the docks as punishment for a serious offense, happened to pass by. He kicked the gang leader flying.
From then on, he came to eat at her stall every day, twice a day, rain or shine, without missing a single day...
