Lou Zhanle was the third-generation heir to the dynasty. Though mediocre, he was not incompetent, and could have waited for the throne to pass peacefully into his hands. But he brought disaster upon himself and committed a terrible crime.
He had a secret crush on his cousin and didn't dare make a move. Then he noticed that the dynasty's guardian dragon, whose jade statue had stood watch for generations, looked six or seven parts like his cousin. One drunken night, when no one was around, he nestled into the statue's arms and did all sorts of outrageous things, only to be discovered by a crowd.
Everyone said he coveted the Dragon Lord and had blasphemed against a god.
The jade statue cracked, strange phenomena shook heaven and earth, and the Dragon Lord appeared in the form of an ominous black dragon. From then on, disasters and calamities fell one after another, reducing the dynasty to ruins.
Lou Zhanle became a sinner remembered for all time, and was ultimately sentenced to death by boiling in oil.
After being reborn, Lou Zhanle immediately climbed down from the jade statue and frantically begged forgiveness, worshipping it with reverence for fear of offending the Dragon Lord in the slightest.
But ten days later, the jade statue still cracked...
Where was the Dragon Lord? Had I angered the guardian dragon into running off again?
By chance, Ao Che's dragon pearl was swallowed by the dying Lou Zhanle. Without it, he couldn't ascend, but taking it back would kill the Lou Zhanle who had just helped him.
To settle his debt, Ao Che had no choice but to let his dragon pearl remain inside Lou Zhanle for the time being, until he recovered.
Despite Lou Zhanle's attentiveness, Ao Che still treated him coldly. After all, the boy had once been so shameless as to make a move on him. Surely he still hadn't given up on wanting him.
Ao Che: Hmph! Don't think that sucking up to me will give you a chance with me. You have no chance. Not the slightest...
But gradually, Ao Che noticed that Lou Zhanle picked the most beautiful flowers for him, offered the most devout incense, and collected the gold objects dragons loved most. Whenever trouble arose, he would even put himself in harm's way to shield Ao Che, despite being a weak mortal, terrified that he might suffer the slightest injury.
Ao Che: You like me that much?
Lou Zhanle: Huh?
Ao Che: Never mind. Since you're my most devout believer, I'll grant you one request after I ascend. Anything you want. (Even becoming my dragon consort!)
Lou Zhanle: ...Could you not turn evil, and protect the people of the dynasty for generations?
The true dragon's pupils narrowed dangerously, and his tail slowly curled around the oblivious human, pinning him against his reverse scales.
Ao Che: I'll give you one more chance to choose your words. I will grant you anything.
Lou Zhanle: ...Uh.
The tail behind his waist slapped more and more impatiently. Lou Zhanle instinctively sensed danger and tried to run, but it was already too late.
Ao Che: The punishment for blasphemy is to feed your body to a dragon.
Lou Zhanle: I really don't covet the Dragon Lord at all!!!!
