Sui Zhen is a total scaredy-cat. He's so afraid of ghosts that even running at night with eerie background music playing can make him set a new personal best.
Hoping to work up his courage, he tried reading a supernatural novel. But after falling asleep, he woke up as a disposable supporting character in the story.
Being a disposable character is rough. As soon as he appeared, the story's villainous boss, the Ghost King Xue Jin, possessed him. From then on, he had no control over himself. He had to carry out all sorts of dangerous tasks for Xue Jin, while his life force was gradually drained away. After he died, he'd be made into a puppet for Xue Jin to use. He was practically the model disposable character.
Thinking about his future, Sui Zhen was terrified, but still fought back against the Ghost King standing before him.
Somehow, he accidentally turned the possession into a contract.
Sui Zhen watched Xue Jin turn green-faced and fanged with rage, and shrieked, "Big bro, let's talk this out! Don't transform, I'm scared!"
Xue Jin hadn't expected his path to reclaiming his throne to be derailed by a scaredy-cat right at the start. But for the sake of freedom, he could only put up with it for now. He'd use him, wring him dry, threaten him, and then kill him.
Not long afterward, rumors spread that the useless eldest son of a family of exorcists had suddenly gained tremendous power. He had taken on a Ghost Slave of unfathomable strength, and even the most powerful evil spirits knelt in submission before him.
The crowd couldn't believe it and went to see for themselves. They found Sui Zhen hiding behind his own Ghost Slave, trembling with fear.
The so-called Ghost Slave slapped the head off the evil spirit in front of them.
"Damn it, didn't I tell you he was scared? Who told you to turn into that ugly ghost? Make yourself look better and try again!"
Everyone: ...
Evil spirit: Sob, why do I get dragged in as a training dummy and then get insulted for my looks? Will nobody speak up for ghosts?
After an argument with Xue Jin, Sui Zhen decided to ignore him for a whole day. But before long, a ghost scared him so badly that he had to summon his husband. Xue Jin arrived and slapped the ghost's head off again.
Xue Jin: "Hmph, didn't you say you didn't need me? Why call me now?"
Sui Zhen: "I need you, I need you! I need you more than anyone."
Xue Jin was satisfied.
Evil spirit: So noble, so impressive. You can't apologize, so you send us to scare your wife, then you hit us!
Xue Jin: "You're so afraid of ghosts. Why weren't you scared at all the first time you saw me?"
Sui Zhen: "Because... you were good-looking?"
Xue Jin: "Hmph, I knew you fell in love with me at first sight. You just wouldn't admit it!"
Sui Zhen: ...Not really, but he didn't dare argue in case Xue Jin got angry and transformed again.
