The Noble Lady Marries into a Humble Family

The new emperor was incompetent and foolish, so the emperor's uncle, who guarded the frontier, launched a campaign to seize the throne.

After taking power, his first act was to reward the meritorious men who had helped him win the realm.

To help these men, who came from humble backgrounds, adjust to life in the capital, the emperor arranged marriages on a grand scale, matching them with members of noble families.

But these men were rough peasants from the frontier, not even poor scholars, let alone members of respectable families. Which high-ranking household in the capital would be willing to marry its daughter off to a life of hardship?

The Shen family was a prestigious clan, and Shen Mingyin was its eldest legitimate daughter, renowned throughout the capital. She had been promised a fine match befitting her status, but her stepsister switched their marriages.

In the end, Shen Mingyin had no choice but to accept the imperial decree and marry Wei Zhao.

Wei Zhao had rendered outstanding service to the emperor and was named the youngest great general of the dynasty. Yet he was an uncouth brute who couldn't read a single character and swore like a commoner.

His mother was fierce, his father greedy, and he also had a scheming young cousin who wanted to move into his home...

By every measure, this marriage seemed like a terrible match.

Shen Mingyin thought so too.

So, on their wedding night, she presented him with a contract and said plainly, "I will manage your household and help your Wei family establish yourselves in the capital. When the time comes, you will give me a large sum of money, and then we will divorce. Sign here."

Wei Zhao glanced at her and said coldly that he couldn't write.

So before they could consummate their marriage, the newlyweds spent the entire wedding night learning to write.
