Yue Mian was a Taoist priest in her previous life. She died while hunting ghosts and found herself in a dynasty that had never existed in history, inheriting a small eatery and a proud little cat.
There were no ghosts in this dynasty, so Yue Mian couldn't hunt any. Instead, she returned to her other old trade and became a cook.
Full of confidence, she expected to make a fortune. Little did she know that her first day in business would be a spectacular flop: the street outside was deserted, business was dismal, and only a handful of familiar faces showed up to support her.
Yue Mian didn't lose heart. If she couldn't return to one old trade, she'd go back to the other.
And so passersby saw a sign in front of the ordinary little eatery, covered in mysterious writing:
Come in to eat, draw a fortune slip. If it doesn't come true, your meal is free.
At first, the passersby didn't take it seriously. That is, until...
When Scholar Zhao had all but given up hope, he wandered into the eatery and casually ordered a bowl of hot-and-sour rice noodles, a dish he'd never heard of. Following Yue Mian's instructions, he really did find the child he'd been separated from years ago.
Worried sick, Auntie Huang decided to try her luck and ordered the cheapest minced-meat noodles. Before long, the silver hairpin she'd been pining for appeared right before her eyes.
Even the notoriously unlucky heir of Puyang stopped having bad luck after visiting the eatery.
Everyone thought: This food is good, this food is wonderful, even ghosts would want to eat it!
Yuan An, heir to the Prince of Shanyang, had been unlucky all his life. At his worst, even a sip of water could make him choke. He was forever teetering on the brink of death, but somehow never died.
One day, Yuan An had had enough of his miserable luck. Just as he was about to end his life in his room with a length of white silk, the Taoist priest who had always followed him rushed in, seized his hand, and cried tears of joy:
"My lord, your luck is about to turn!"
Before Yuan An could make sense of it, the Taoist priest dragged him to the door of a little eatery and pointed excitedly at Yue Mian behind the counter. "Stay by her side, and you'll never have bad luck again."
Yuan An followed the Taoist priest's pointing hand and met Yue Mian's eyes.
In that instant, he saw the young woman's smile freeze. She raised her right hand and began calculating just like the Taoist priest, then looked as if the sky had fallen. She murmured:
"Oh no. This time it's coming for me."
Later, Yue Mian acquired a human attachment who followed her everywhere. Wherever she went, he went too.
The seasons turned and the ingredients changed.
In the little eatery, the warmth of daily life flourished.
All people seek in life is the taste on their tongues and the matters in their hearts.
