Chasing the Sun

The most pointless thing Xu Feiyang ever did was write down the score difference from every exam in a notebook.

181, 104, 132, 176, 82...

The score differences rose and fell,

like the distance between him and Xie Zhixing, sometimes close, sometimes far.

On the last page of the notebook, one sentence was written with such force it nearly tore through the paper:

"I'm going to chase the sun."

There's only a hair's breadth between genius and madness.

But the gap between an ordinary person and a genius is like an entire galaxy.

At thirty, Xu Feiyang looked back on the road he'd traveled.

In high school, the 181-point gap was the closest he'd ever come to Xie Zhixing.

At a class reunion years later, someone asked Xie Zhixing, "Xie, was there anything you regretted from high school?"

Xie Zhixing set down his glass and glanced at Xu Feiyang. "Yes."

The room fell silent.

"Xu Feiyang owes me five yuan and still hasn't paid me back."

"When did I..."

"September 3, the first semester of our second year. At lunch in the cafeteria, you said you'd forgotten your meal card."

"...Top student, is that perfect memory of yours really meant for remembering this?"

Xie Zhixing smiled without answering.

What he remembered was that day. He'd already left Xu Feiyang behind, but then suddenly appeared in the classroom.

"Xie Zhixing, want to come with me?"

He'd transferred alone to an unfamiliar city.

That was the first kindness anyone had shown him.
